U2 turned 40 and I’m so disappointed

THE world’s biggest band turned 40 last month, but the milestone passed with not much more than a murmur in Australia.

While fans turned up in droves at celebratory events in Dublin and Cleveland, Australia shamefully let the anniversary pass with no mention in mainstream media nor a gathering of U2ers in any major city.

Nirvana’s Nevermind album, which turned 25 on the same day (September 25), certainly did get some attention.

The world’s biggest band turned 40, but you’d hardly know it if you live in Australia.

Don’t get me wrong, I do like Nirvana, but fuck, we’re talking U2 here.

Forty years.

Many marriages don’t last that long.

As the song lyrics go, “I believe in a celebration”, and four decades of life is something worth making a hullabaloo over.

I read social media posts, looked at photos and watched video footage of those events overseas and sat here enviously wishing I could be there.

There is no doubt there are U2 fans in the thousands here. All you have to do is look at attendances at U2 tours over the years.

So here’s a challenge: let’s make sure U2’s 50th anniversary doesn’t go unnoticed.

Let’s grow a community of Australian U2 fans.

To begin with, support Australian U2 fan sites such as this, and the many others out there, by checking out their Facebook and Twitter accounts.

We don’t do this for money, we do this because we want to share our love of U2 with as many people as possible.

If you’re reading this, and you know friends or family who would be interested in these sites, let them know about it.

The aim is to find as many Aussie U2ers as possible and put on fan events whenever we can.

Imagine U2 music playing all night long, with a tribute band on stage, giveaways, and meeting up with others who share the same passion.

U2 has the most caring fan base in the world.

It’s time we build a tribe in Oz.

Who’s with me?

Follow U2 Australia on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
